A ôculaö is a fortified building dating from the 18th century, which is typical for Oltenia. The name is of Turkish origin and means ôdefence tower.ö Widely used by the Oltenian aristocrats of the time who wished to defend themselves against Turkish invasions, these buildings lost in time their defending function and became simple noble residences. They are very tall, have a square shape, one or two floors communicating on the inside by means of stairs, thick, whitewashed walls and very small windows.
They also have a small open tower with vaults that look like the handle of a basket or triconch arches supported by thick pillars.
The Mπldπre║ti ôCulaö, which bears the name of a village lying 50 km away from RΓmnicu VΓlcea, is one of the most interesting buildings of its kind in the region of Oltenia
